Hyaluronic Acid Gel Filler

Restylane is a safe and natural dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Restylane is a crystal-clear, biodegradable gel made of a natural substance, called hyaluronic acid (HA).

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate polymer (glycosaminoglycan) that exists naturally in all living organisms. It is a natural component of connective tissues, including the skin where it provides volume and fullness. Hyaluronic acid is a major component of the extracellular matrix, is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues, is one of the chief lubricating components of synovial fluid in joints, contributes significantly to cell proliferation and migration, and participates in a number of cell surface receptor interactions.

The hyaluronic acid molecule is not species specific and is the same for all mammals. As a result, the hyaluronic acid in Restylane is completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a called NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid); it is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins, and no skin test is required.

Restylane maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is has a strong affinity for water. As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide long-lasting results. As the hyaluronic acid breaks down, Restylane turns into water and carbon dioxide. Unlike permanent treatments or implants, Restylane always leaves you with the option of re-evaluating your needs over time. A follow-up treatment can be performed at any time after the previous treatment.

One of the great advantages of Restylane is that it is long-lasting, but not permanent. The typical treatment lasts approximately six months, and in some instances Restylane has been shown to be effective for an even longer period of time. Hyaluronic acid fillers demonstrate greater longevity when placed more superficially in the skin, or when placed in areas with less motion.

RESTYLANE® Provides Instant and Long-Lasting Wrinkle Correction

Medicis, the makers of Restylane and Perlane, recently conducted a clinical study to evaluate the longevity of Restylane following treatment of the nasolabial folds.  In this study, Restylane continued to provide improvement for up to 18 months after the initial treatment, when each nasolabial fold received a follow-up treatment at 4.5 or 9 months. Full correction was provided at the initial treatment (average 2.8cc/patient), and the efficacy and persistence of correction was then evaluated using two different re-treatment schedules. The initial mean injection volume was 1.4cc/nasolabial fold. During the follow-up treatment (at 4.5 or 9 months), patients required only half of the initial injection volume (0.7cc/nasolabial fold) to re-establish full correction. At least 95% of patients continued to see improvement at 18 months.

The mean improvement in Wrinkle Severity rating Scale (WSRS) score at 18 months was similar to the mean improvement in WSRS after the initial treatment. This study emphasizes the importance of providing full correction at the initial treatment, and that a simple maintenance treatment enhances the overall result.

Restylane was the first FDA-approved, non-animal, stabilized, injectable hyaluronic acid for aesthetic use. To date, Restylane is the number one selling dermal filler, and has been used successfully for over 10 million treatments in more than 70 countries worldwide.

RESTYLANE® Offers High Patient Satisfaction

A recent patient satisfaction survey of 1325 patients, who received full correction with Restylane, demonstrated the following:

• 92% of people would return to their Restylane doctor

• 92% of people would recommend the Restylane family of products (which includes Perlane and Dysport) to their friends and family

• 89% of people were happy with their results

RESTYLANE-L® Offers Improved Comfort

Beginning in February 2010 Restylane-L became available for use. Restylane-L contains the addition of 0.3% lidocaine for improved patient comfort.  In a randomized, double-blind, split-face study, subjects received Restylane in one nasolabial fold, and Restylane-L in the other. 72% of patients treated with Restylane-L reported at least a 10mm reduction in pain score (using a 100mm Visual Analog Scale) at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after injection; this was statistically significant at all time points assessed. Patients find the treatments more comfortable, and some even choose to forego the local anesthetic injections.

RESTYLANE® Treatment

Restylane gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement, for your skin. The injected gel produces natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. Smoothing out wrinkles by adding volume can make an enormous difference to your appearance. Restylane works well to improve the nasolabial folds, perioral lip lines and the lip border, red lip fullness, the corners of the mouth, marionette lines, the pre-jowl sulcus, the chin crease, the cheeks, the tear trough deformity, and some scars. Restylane can be used almost anywhere on the face with good results.

Restylane has become the market leading dermal filler. According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 1,206,186 hyaluronic acid treatments were performed in the US in 2011, making this the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

Achieving the look you desire is quick and easy. The versatility of Restylane allows you to have a natural improvement with the body’s own material. Restylane restores natural volume in your skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles and produce new fullness and firmness, resulting in a healthy, vital appearance. The results of Restylane treatments can be seen immediately, and treatments can be repeated as often as you like.
