Instant and long-lasting wrinkle correction
Perlane is a safe and natural dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles. Perlane is a crystal-clear gel made of a natural substance, called hyaluronic acid (HA) that exists in all living mammals.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of connective tissues. In the skin it is a major component of the extracellular matrix and dermis, where provides volume and fullness. HA is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues, is a chief lubricating component of synovial fluid in joints, contributes significantly to cell proliferation and migration, and participates in a number of cell surface receptor interactions.
The hyaluronic acid molecule is not species specific so the HA in Perlane is completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Perlane is non-animal dermal filler so an allergy skin test is not required prior to receiving treatment.
Perlane is used to smooth moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, such as the (nasolabial folds, by restoring volume and fullness to the skin. Perlane generally lasts for about 6 months. Perlane is injected into the deep dermis or superficial subcutis with a fine needle. It volumizes the skin to smooth away wrinkles and folds. Perlane’s water-loving nature attracts and binds water molecules to help maintain volume. The HA in Perlane is a crystal clear gel that is chemically cross-linked (the long chemical strands are tied together) to delay breakdown by skin enzymes. Perlane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Perlane effects generally last about six months. Perlane gradually disappears from the body without a trace.
Perlane was studied in multiple clinical studies. In one, treatment of the nasolabial folds with Perlane resulted in an improvement in wrinkles in 137 of 149 (92% of) patients after three months, and 105 of 148 (71% of) patients after six months. In another study, treatment of nasolabial folds with Perlane resulted in an improvement in wrinkles in 122 of 141 (87% of) patients after three months, and 88 of 138 (64% of) patients after six months. Side effects were mild, and Perlane did not cause allergic reactions.
Perlane has been used safely and with good results by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 2000 worldwide, and was approved by the FDA on May 2, 2007. Perlane is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles.
Perlane is made by Medicis, which also makes the wrinkle filler Restylane. Both products contain hyaluronic acid and demonstrate excellent safety. The primary difference between Restylane and Perlane is that the hyaluronic acid gel particles in Perlane are larger than those found in Restylane. These larger gel particles offer enhanced volume and lifting power.
