Patients frequently ask what product they can apply over their scar to achieve a better result. There are many options to choose from, but one of our preferences for topical application bioCorneum®+. Applying bioCorneum®+ over the scar will help provide the optimal environment for the best aesthetic outcome. We carry bioCorneum®+ in our office as a convenience for our patients, and recommend that our patients use this after their sutures are removed and their wound is closed. Different surgeons may have their own preference as to when to begin topical application of a scar cream or gel; so please speak to your doctor to learn what is best for you.
bioCorneum®+ is the first and only FDA-cleared advanced silicone gel scar treatment with SFP 30 for preventing and minimizing the appearance of scars, and the darkening (hyperpigmentation) effects of sun exposure. bioCorneum+ has well over 2000 patient clinical results with over 40 internationally published medical studies documenting effectiveness with consistent application. bioCorneum®+ is composed of 100% silicone and gentle sunscreens. The patented silicone formulation in bioCorneum®+ has been shown to flatten, soften, and smooth scars, as well as to reduce discoloration. bioCorneum®+ may also relieve the associated itch and discomfort of scars. It has been demonstrated in clinical studies that proactively treating a new scar with the patented silicone formulation in bioCorneum®+ may reduce the likelihood of abnormal scar formation, and provide an optimal environment for aesthetic scar outcome.
12 Week Scar Post-Operative Management Program with bioCorneum +
bioCorneum®+ can be applied after suture removal, and when the skin surface is healed and any crusting has resolved. A thin layer of bioCorneum®+ is applied over the scar twice daily for twelve weeks or until noticeable results are no longer visible. An extended application of bioCorneum®+, for six months to a year, may be beneficial for individuals that have a tendency to form hypertrophic (raised, red) scars or keloids.
How Should bioCorneum®+ Be Used?
Be sure the scar is clean and dry, and free from any oils, emollients, or lotions
Apply a very thin layer of bioCorneum®+, two times per day, directly over the scar and allow it to dry completely (usually 4-5 minutes).
More is not better, and just results in product waste. A very thin layer is all that is needed. One pea size drop is enough to cover a three-inch linear scar. If the bioCorneum®+ is not drying in a few minutes, you are likely applying too much of the product
Apply bioCorneum®+ once in the morning, and once in the evening, for a minimum of three months or until you stop seeing a noticeable improvement. If you have a tendency to form hypertrophic or keloid scars, you may want to use it for six months to a year.
Adhering to the twice-daily treatment schedule consistently every day, for the prescribed length of treatment, is important. To be effective bioCorneum®+ should be in contact with your scar 24 hours a day.
Once dry, bioCorneum®+ can be covered with cosmetics or compression garments.
Scar massage may help reduce deeper swelling with in the scar and may help to break up scar tissue. BioCorneum+ can be gently massaged into the scar as it is applied. If your physician has recommended more vigorous scar massage, you may wish to do this prior to the application of the BioCorneum+.
Can BioCorneum+ be used on Old Scars?
Yes, you may begin treatment with bioCorneum+ at any time. Studies have shown that bioCorneum+ helped scars that were two to four years old. But when bioCorneum+ is applied earlier there is a greater likelihood of optimizing the aesthetic outcome. Typically, if the area is red, raised, sore, or itchy you will see a benefit when bioCorneum+ is used consistently twice per day.
What Type of Scars Will bioCorneum+ Not Help?
bioCorneum+ will not improve white, flat linear scars. It may help the swelling and redness associated with post-inflammatory acne flare-ups. But bioCorneum+ will not help the depressed, icepick, pitted (atrophic) scars that have been caused by acne. If you are bothered by acne scarring, you should consider a Fraxel laser resurfacing procedure instead.
Is bioCorneum+ Safe?
bioCorneum+ can be used almost anywhere on the body. bioCorneum+ should be applied to intact skin that is free from crusting or drainage. Avoid application to mucous membranes, third degree burns, and open wounds. bioCorneum+ can be carefully placed on the eyelids, but avoid direct contact with the eyes. bioCorneum+ can be safely used on children’s skin. If your child is two years old, or younger, please check with your physician.
What Else Do I need to Know?
bioCorneum+ is waterproof so you can use it during exercising and swimming. Be sure to consult with your surgeon about when it is appropriate for you to return to strenuous exercise and the pool.
bioCorneum+ is good for three years from the manufacturing date so you do not have to worry about it going bad.
bioCorneum+ can only be purchased in a physician’s office. You will not find this on the Internet or in retail stores.
Two sizes of bioCorneum+ are available, 20gr and 50gr. Each bottle will last the full course of treatment, which is three months. Consult with your physician or patient coordinator about which size is right for you.
