Improve Your Body Image
For individuals who have loose excess skin and sagging body contours exercise cannot always achieve a well-toned body. Aging, sun damage, pregnancy, and significant fluctuations in weight contribute to poor tissue elasticity and can result in sagging of the abdominal, flank, buttock, and thigh skin. Familial fat deposits add unaesthetic contours and bulk, preventing adherence of the skin and superficial fat to the underlying musculoskeletal structures; soft tissues that lack adherence do not age well and sag. If you desire a more youthful looking body contour, then a surgical body lift may help achieve your goals. A body lift involves excision of excess, loose skin and fat – improving body image and enhancing self-confidence.
Body lifts are not intended as a weight loss procedure, but instead for individuals with poor skin elasticity and loose sagging skin. Many conditions may contribute to tissues that are weak, sagging, and lacking tone. The most common causes include:
- Weight changes, especially substantial weight loss, such as that which follows gastric bypass surgery
- Stress on the skin and underlying tissue that may result from pregnancy
- The natural aging process causing skin to lose elasticity and tone over time
- Sun damage and other environmental factors that contribute to premature aging of the skin
- Heredity or genetic make-up that determines ones body type and skin qualities
- Childhood and teenage obesity which may result in premature loss of youthful skin tone
Body lifting procedures may be appropriate for individuals with significant soft tissue looseness in one or more body areas, who maintain a stable weight that is reasonably proportionate to their height and body frame. Body lifting and contouring procedures are more easily performed with fewer complications on individuals whose BMI is < 30. BMI relates a person’s weight to his/her height, and is the most commonly used method for determining a patient’s weight status.
BMI = weight in kilograms
(height in meters)2
BMI = weight in pounds x 703
(height in inches)2
Underweight < 18.5
Normal 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight 25 – 29.9
Obese 30 – 39.9
Morbid Obesity 40 – 49.9 (or 100 pounds over ideal body weight)
Super Morbid Obesity > 50
Body lifts produce a dramatic improvement in skin tightness in the trunk, thigh, and buttock aesthetic units, restoring youthful contours and definition. There is no other method of body contouring that can restore body shape and skin tone as effectively as a body lift. Body lift surgery is individualized to the specific conditions and regions to be treated. Excision length and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Advanced techniques usually place incisions in strategic locations along anatomic boundaries where they can be hidden by most types of clothing and swim suits. Fat deposits are treated with liposuction during the body lift to furhter improve contouring.
A complete lower body lift treats the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, and buttocks in one procedure. A circumferential incision around the body removes an apron of excess skin and fat and repositions and tightens tissue. Deep support sutures within the underlying tissues help to reshape and tighten the abdomen, groin, waist, thigh and buttock. A combination of body lift techniques and liposuction may be necessary to achieve optimal contour.
The results of a body lift are visible immediately, but it takes several months for the final results to fully develop. The new uplifted body contour should be long lasting, provided individuals maintain general fitness and stable weight. As the body ages, it will naturally lose some firmness, but most of the improvement should be relatively permanent.
